After School
Art & Music
Ages 6–12 years, 60 minutes (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)
2D Art: In this class we will be exploring 2D art through drawing, painting, and collage. Projects and activities are designed to help develop important skills such as fine motor movements, working cooperatively in pairs and groups, the ability to describe and articulate what a student sees, and self-expression. There will be both a making component, as well as a "looking" component, where the instructor guides students in learning to talk about aesthetic qualities of objects and pictures. Students will be challenged to explore a wide variety of media and techniques.
3D Art: This class will be similar in approach to the 2D class, but with a different type of content. We will be exploring three-dimensional art and craft though the use of clay, crafting objects using materials from nature, masks, and small scale sculpture. Projects and activities are designed to help develop important skills such as fine motor movements, working cooperatively in pairs and groups, the ability to describe and articulate what a student sees and self-expression. There will be both a making component, as well as a "looking" component, where the instructor guides students in learning to talk about aesthetic qualities of objects and pictures, especially objects from nature.
We will learn to look at and emulate art from a large variety of cultures and geographic regions. Students will be encouraged to explore different media, try new things, and most importantly, have fun!
Music: Students will be immersed in music both as listeners, and performers. The instructor will expose students to music from all over the world, and from a variety of time periods, challenging them to use descriptive language and active listening to really engage with what they are hearing, and practice communicating it to one another. Students will also learn to begin playing music through the most accessible instruments -- percussion, and voice! Through body percussion, marching in time, small drums and other percussive instruments, students will learn the fundamentals of rhythm and most importantly, playing together! Through singing students will learn about melody and harmony, working together to emulate the music they hear, and even create some of their own!
